On August 14th, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the south part of Haiti with many larger aftershocks which are causing additional damages in the following days and months. This earthquake is stronger than in 2010. So far, more than 2,100 have died, and 10,000 are injured – with many still missing. Local hospitals are overwhelmed, and they are facing a lack of medical supplies and other domestic resources.
Reaching Beyond International (RBI) – a division of the 510 Foundation located in Nashville, TN – has served in Haiti since 2011 to improve lives through medical care and various community projects in several areas in the country.
Our main health project, “Van Mullen Memorial Clinic”, is in the Central Plateau (Center) of Saut-D’Eau. This is in the other side to the South regions of Les Cayes, Grande-Anse (Jeremie) and Nippes, the departments mostly affected by this earthquake.
We received word that our clinic has minor damages from the earthquake. Our community members and personnel are safe however a person is reported dead in our village.
The cyclonic season makes rescue and supply missions more difficult.
We are now coordinating with local organizations to assist with necessities. We will travel later in September to assess both the damages at the clinic and the coordinated assistance that we need to provide in the affected region.
